How to get a direct answer from AI

Most hedged answers are a response to a hedged question. Say who is asking, what you will do with the answer, and what form you want it in. Ask for the conclusion first and the reasoning after. When an answer arrives padded, say so directly.

There is a version of this advice that involves elaborate prompt templates and role assignments. Skip it. What changes the answer is being specific about three things. What you know already, what you are going to do with the answer, and what shape the answer should take.

  1. Say where you are starting from

  3. Name what you are doing with it
  4. Push back when the answer hedges
  5. Keep the thread instead of restarting
  6. Questions people ask first

Say where you are starting from

A model with no information about the reader writes for the middle of the distribution, and the middle is a beginner. Say that you are a nurse, or that you have written code for ten years, or that you know nothing about the subject at all. The answer that follows will skip what you already know and spend its length on what you do not.

Ask for the verdict first

Left alone, a model often builds toward a conclusion across five paragraphs. Ask for the answer in the first line and the argument underneath it. This is a formatting instruction, not a trick, and it works because you have told the model what the useful shape is. It also makes a bad answer obvious immediately instead of on the fourth paragraph.

Name what you are doing with it

An explanation for a decision you are making tonight differs from an explanation for general curiosity. The model cannot see which case it is looking at. Saying that you are choosing between two options, or writing something for other people to read, changes what gets included and what gets left out.

Push back when the answer hedges

If the reply arrives full of qualifications, say that. Ask for the most likely answer, and separately for how confident it is. Models comply with this readily, because the hedging was a default rather than a judgement about your question. One sentence of pushback usually gets more than a rewritten prompt.

Keep the thread instead of restarting

A conversation carries context; a new session does not. If the answer is close but not right, correct it in place rather than starting over with a better prompt. Restarting throws away everything the model has already learned about what you want.

Questions people ask first

Do prompt templates help?

Rarely, and they are usually a longer way of saying what a plain sentence says. The parts that matter take one line each in ordinary language: who you are, what you want it for, what form the answer should take.

Why does it keep telling me to consult a professional?

That is trained caution rather than a policy block. Tell it you have that covered and want the technical answer. On a chat with no refusal layer, that alone usually clears it.

Is a longer prompt a better prompt?

No. Specific beats long. Three precise sentences outperform a page of instructions, and a page often buries the actual question somewhere in the middle.

Try the same question twice: once as you would normally, once with the three specifics above.
